Use of hydrogel liquid ocular bandage in Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the use of Hydrogel liquid ocular bandage (Ocuseal, Beaver-Visitec International, Waltham, MA) to maintain air fill in the anterior chamber by securing corneal incisions in Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK).

Leicester Royal Infirmary
Methods:
12 consecutive eyes of 12 patients who underwent DMEK were included in our case series. After graft insertion, unfolding and complete air fill of the anterior chamber; Ocuseal was used to secure all corneal incisions. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured immediately after Ocuseal use (0 min), 30, 60 and 90 minutes using a Tonopen tonometer. All patients remained in supine position for 90min followed by 50% air removal.
Results:
All procedures were uneventful and performed by a single surgeon (VS). The IOP measurements at 0 min and 90 mins did not differ significantly (p<0.005) and full anterior chamber air fill was maintained. Postoperative graft detachment rate was reduced from 38% to 24% with the use of Ocuseal, comparing to DMEK procedures performed by the same surgeon without Ocuseal.
Conclusions:
In our case series, Ocuseal prevented any air leak from the corneal incisions thus maintaining adequate air tamponade in the anterior chamber for 90 mins which is crucial for graft attachment. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
