Anterior and posterior corneal changes after intracorneal ring segment implantation in eyes with keratoconus

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the relationship between anterior and posterior corneal changes after intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation in eyes with keratoconus.

Setting:

Medipol University Medical School

Methods:

102 eyes of 68 patients with keratoconus that underwent ICRS implantation using FS laser were included. All eyes were evaluated before and at least 6-months after surgery using Placido-Scheimpflug tomographer and anterior segment optical coherence tomography. The anterior sagittal, tangential, the posterior sagittal tangential, the anterior, posterior, and total corneal aberrations were evaluated before and after surgery.

Results:

The mean K decreased from 47.2±2.6 D to 43.9±1.8 D, and the mean posterior K increased from -7.5±1.6 D to -6.3±1.9 D (p<0.05). The mean anterior OPD (from 1.88±0.15 to 1.39±0.12), astigmatism (from 1.59±0.13 to 1.06±0.11), and coma (from 0.64±0.16 to 0.40±0.12) significantly decreased (p<0.05) whereas posterior OPD, higher order aberrations (from 0.53±0.18 to 0.66±0.21), coma (from 1.18±0.12 to 0.42±0.18), and spherical aberrations increased (from 0.07±0.11 to 0.14±0.12) after ICRS implantation (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

Although anterior corneal aberrations decrease posterior corneal aberrations increase that may lead to antero-posterior compensation changes after ICRS implantation. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
