The relationship between ocular surface disease and cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Pre-operative tests for cataract surgery should be performed accurately and correctly with the aim to perform a successful cataract removal procedure. Patients should be informed about the risks, possible surgical complications and potential consequences regarding cataract surgery outcomes. Initially present corneal disease may predispose patients to complications, or lower their expectations regarding the surgery outcomes. Prior to cataract surgery, assessment of the cornea by detailed endothelial biomicroscopy should be obtained.

Setting:

When the cornea is suspected of having endothelial changes, additional measurements include pachymetry and specular microscopy.

Methods:

Patient case study: A few cases of complicated surgeries due to pronounced cloudy cornea of different etiologies have been reported. Possible intraoperative and postoperative complications have been pointed out, as well as the importance of adequate preparation of patients with corneal disorders who are predisposed to early or late complications, especially those with Fuchs’ dystrophy.

Results:

: Patients with cataract and disorders of the anterior surface of the eye require a great deal of patience and care

Conclusions:

The patients should be fully informed about the problem and possible complications and should be well prepared for the operation, as well as encouraged to have patience regarding their condition. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
