How a resident can learn to perform a laser part of laser assisted cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Laser assisted cataract surgery is gaining popularity in developed world. One of the challenges is how to incorporate the laser part in the patient flow of high volume cataract clinics. Teaching resident to this challenge.

Setting:

Gemini Eye Clinic, Prague and Zlin, Czech Republic

Methods:

The first year resident was introduced to laser part of laser assisted cataract surgery (Z8, Ziemer).This resident has had no previous surgical experience. She had to master the following steps: introducing the speculum, attaching a suction ring to the eye, docking the laser handpiece to the suction ring, observing the OCT pictures of lens and suggested fragmentation and capsulotomy patterns, start the laser procedure, observing the laser lens fragmentation and capsulotomy progression on laser monitor, dismounting the handpiece and speculum from the eye. The cataract surgeon was available all the time at the next operating room.

Results:

The resident was able to perform the laser part of the procedure after observing 10 procedures done by the principal surgeon. With the guidance of the laser technician and the principal surgeon she performed all her first 10 procedures up to date without any complication.

Conclusions:

Taking a resident into the process spares the time of the principal surgeon and give a resident theopportunity to acquire the first laser surgical experience. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
