Visual outcome of Toric IOL implantation after intrastromal corneal rings in keratoconus stage II (clinical case)

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the efficacy of cataract surgery in patients with keratoconus after implantation of intrastromal corneal ring segments and toric intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

Moscow Helmholtz Research Institute of Eye Diseases.

Methods:

There is a clinical case of a 79 years old patient with the 2nd stage of keratoconus. In 6 months after implantation of intrastromal corneal ring segments this patient underwent phacoemulsification with implantation of Tecnis Toric IOL. Corneal astigmatism was measured using a dual Scheimpflug-Placido topography before implantation of intrastromal corneal ring segments and phacoemulsification. Two years after phacoemulsification the refractive results were investigated and calculation of the amount of endothelial cells was carried out.

Results:

The best corrected visual acuity was 20/200 before treatment and was 20/30 2 years after implantation of intrastromal corneal ring segments and cataract surgery. There was a 2 degrees-difference between Sim K axis and TCP axis before implantation of intrastromal corneal ring segments and a 3 degrees- difference between TCP axis 2 years after phacoemulsification. According to keratotopography the magnitude of cornel astigmatism was 5.14 D before and 3.22 D 2 years after the treatment. There were 1527 endothelial cells per 1 mm^2 2 years after surgery.

Conclusions:

The combination of intrastromal corneal ring segments and toric IOL allows to achieve good refractive results in keratoconus cases. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
