Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the effectiveness of cataract phacoemulsification in patients with Marfan syndrome using capsule fixation device (CFD) of Sergienko.
Setting:
6 patients (12 eyes) with Marfan syndrome were operated in period from 2010 to 2014 in ophthalmological department Visiobud of hospital Medbud Kiev, Ukraine.
Methods:
Operation technique: one or two CFD were implanted through 2.2 mm incision and sutured to sclera in pars plana projection after standard capsulorhexis and hydrodissection. Then cataract phacoemulsification and IOL implantation into the capsular bag was made. IOL centration was evaluated during OCT examination.
Results:
There was improvement of best-corrected visual acuity from 1/20 - 1/5 to 3/5 - 1/1 in 1 month after surgery. IOL centration was achieved in all cases. Postoperative astigmatism was less than 1.0 diopter. Opacification of posterior capsule with decrease of visual acuity was examined in 3 cases (3 eyes) during 2 years after surgery. In all cases of posterior opacification capsule Yag-laser capsulotomy was performed with subsequent recovery of visual functions. There were no other complications after surgery.
Conclusions:
Cataract phacoemulsification with CFD of Sergienko is effective in patients with Marfan syndrome. Usage of CFD during cataract phacoemulsification allows to save the capsular bag and prevent the IOL subluxation. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
