Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the visual and refractive outcomes of cataract surgery with implantation of Technis ZCT Toric intraocular lens where the pre-op astigmatism was assessed by automated keratometry.

Setting:

Ophthalmic department of a district hospital in UK (Scarborough Hospital North Yorkshire United Kingdom) from 2011 to 2015.

Methods:

Consecutive series of 86 eyes of 66 patients undergoing cataract surgery with mean corneal astigmatism of 2.55D (Diopters). Mean age on was 73.6 years (54 to 91), 31 (36%) males, 45 (52%) right eyes. IOL used was Technis ZCT Toric IOL. Pre-op astigmatism was evaluated by automatic keratometry (IOL Master) confirmed by handheld keratometry and post-op refraction by an independent optometrists or surgeon. Main outcome measures: post-op unaided acuity (UA) or best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) compared to pre-op BCVA, post-op spectacle refraction compared to pre-op keratometry.

Results:

Post-op UA or BCVA was available in all eyes (100%) and post-op refraction in 42 eyes (49%). Pre-op BCVA was 6/12 or less in 60 out of 86 eyes (59%). Post-op UA was 6/9 or better in 47 out of 59 eyes (81%), post-op BCVA was 6/9 or better in 32 out of 36 eyes (93%) and 6/12 or better in 36 eyes (100%). In some eyes only UA was available. Mean pre-op corneal astigmatism was 2.55D (range 1.26-4.88D) in 86 eyes (100%). Mean post-op refractive cylinder was 0.94D (range 0.00-3.00D) with 67% of eyes 1D or less .

Conclusions:

Cataract extraction with Technis ZCT toric IOL implant is an effective way to reduce pre-existing corneal astigmatism resulting in a high degree of spectacle independence in patients with moderate pre-operative astigmatism. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
