Abstract Details

Purpose:

Clinical evaluation of a wavefront designed progressive intraocular lens (prIOL) with multiple focal points.

Setting:

International Vision Correction Research Centre Network (IVCRC.net), Germany

Methods:

In a prospective, multicenter study, patients that underwent cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange with a calculated postoperative astigmatism ≤ 1.5 D were evaluated. All patients recieved monocular or binocular implantation of the prIOL (Miniwell, Sifi, Italy). The preoperative biometry was performed with the IOL-Master (700, Carl Zeiss Meditech). All IOL powers were calculated with the Holladay formula closed to emmetropia from the myopic side. Subjective refraction, CDVA, UDVA, UIVA, DCIVA, UNVA and DCNVA, monocular and binocular [logMar] were evaluated. Additionally contrast sensitivity and defocus curve analysis were performed.

Results:

3 month postoperative the mean monocular UDVA, UIVA and UNVA were 0.1, repectively. In cases of binocularity there was a significant improvement in visual acuity in all distances. The defocus curve shows a plateau in the from distance to intermediate comparable to trifocal IOLs. The patient satisfaction was very hight.

Conclusions:

The prIOL shows gut results for all distances evaluated resulting in a high rate of spectacle independence.
