Abstract Details
Purpose:
To correlate cumulative dissipated Energy (CDE) in cataract surgery with every parameter of the Lens Opacities Classification System (LOCS) III cataract grading
Setting:
University Hospital of Larissa, Department of Ophthalmology
Methods:
70 programmed cataract surgeries where preoperatively graded according to LOCS III cataract grading system on a decimal scale for nuclear opalescence (NO), nuclear color (NC), cortical cataract (C) and posterior subcapsular cataract (P). The same model of phacoemulsifier (Alcon Infiniti Ozil) was used. All cases were uncomplicated and carried out by the same surgeon and the same technique (phaco chop technique). Postoperatively cumulative dissipated energy was recorded for every single case
Results:
There was strong association between the grading of nuclear opalescence and nuclear color with CDE. On the contrast, there was no such link between the grading of cortex and posterior capsule opacification with CDE.
Conclusions:
Preoperative LOCS III grading for nuclear opalescence and nuclear color is indicative of intraoperative Cumulative Dissipated Energy (CDE). Cataracts graded in high scale, should prompt preoperative endothelial cell density counting. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
