Abstract Details

Purpose:

A novel intraocular lens system comprises two components, a base lens and a front lens. The front lens can be easily exchanged in an enhancement procedure to correct residual refractive errors. The purpose of this work was to optimise the design of this two-lens system in terms of central and peripheral image quality by balancing the power between the two elements, and moreover, to develop the computational framework for the calculation of primary and enhancement surgery.

Setting:

InfiniteVision Optics SAS, Strasbourg, France and University of Crete, Institute of Vision and Optics, Greece and Novavision LASER Center, Naucalpan, Mexico.

Methods:

Following the definition of surgical and manufacturing constraints (e.g. edge thickness) the system was modeled in a commercial optical design software (ZEMAX-EE, ZEMAX Development Corporation, San Diego, USA). The relative power of the two optical components was adjusted in order to maintain low aberrations whilst ensuring high quality in the retinal image throughout a range of dioptric powers (10-30D). For IOL calculation an inverse ray tracing method based on available clinical data for each eye of the ongoing clinical evaluation (Novavision LASER Center, Naucalpan, Mexico) was implemented.

Results:

The design that corresponds to optimised optical performance features a 7D meniscus front lens and an aspheric base lens for primary surgery. In this context all possible spherocylindrical enhancement procedures are achieved by varying the anterior surface of the front lens.

Conclusions:

A novel design IOL system consists of two optically balanced optical elements. Lens calculations, based on exact ray tracing in customized eye models, may enhance the accuracy of primary and enhancement cataract surgery.
