Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the outcome of secondary posterior chamber foldable intraocular lens implantation (IOL) in pediatric patients after congenital cataract surgery

Setting:

Clinical studies performed in Clinic of Pediatric Ophthalmology, University Centre of Ophthalmology and Oncology Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, School of Medicine in Katowice Head of the Department: dr hab. n. med. Erita Filipek

Methods:

Fifty eyes of 31 patients - 11 girls and 20 boys aged from from 2.5 to 10.7 years (mean 5.0) were included in the review. The age of children at the cataract surgery was from 3 to 30 months (mean 6,9) and moment of implantation was from 7 to 82 months (mean 32,0). Follow-up time was from 5 to 96 months(41,1). Visual acuity (CDVA, CNVA), refractive error, optical axis transparency and eyeballs position were examined.

Results:

Best CDVA was from 0,02 to 1,0 (mean 0.3), and for CNVA from 6.0 to 0,5 (mean 2.4 Snellen). Refractive error was mean +15,17Dsph before surgery and +2,01Dsph in the observation period. Mean power of the IOL 23D. In all eyes optical axis was transparent. Esotropia ocurred in 15 children, exotropia in 4 case, nystagmus in 13 patients. Strabismus correction surgery was performed in 7 eyes.

Conclusions:

Secondary implantation of foldable intraocular lenses in the sulcus is a safe and effective method to correct aphakia after congenital cataract surgery in carefully selected pediatric patients. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
