Phacoemulsification cataract surgery outcomes in patients with diabetic retinopathy

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the outcomes of phacoemulsification cataract surgery in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR).

Setting:

King’s College Hospital, London, UK

Methods:

45 patients (21 male and 24 female), with a mean age of 77.4 years old (SD 4.3) and with varying severity of non-proliferative DR, without macular edema, participated in our investigation. All patients underwent uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery between September 2013 and August 2015. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was measured preoperatively and one month postoperatively.

Results:

Postoperative BCVA improved in 32 cases (71.1%), remained stable in 6 cases (13.3%) and deteriorated in 7 cases (15.6%) with DR. There was a significant association between the severity of DR and the postoperative outcome. No progression of DR was noticed in mild and moderate cases, while in 50% of cases with severe non-proliferative DR there was progression to proliferative stage.

Conclusions:

Our study indicates that participants with varying severity of DR benefited from cataract surgery with an increase in BCVA postoperatively. Nevertheless, in patients with severe DR, progression to proliferative stage has to be taken into account; therefore, these patients should be treated with caution. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
