Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the incidence of adverse events and visual outcomes of sequential vs simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery in congenital cataracts.

Setting:

Gazi University School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Ankara, Turkey.

Methods:

We reviewed records of patients with bilateral congenital cataract who underwent simultaneous vs sequential bilateral cataract surgery at our institution.

Results:

Records were available for 13 children who underwent simultaneous surgery at a mean age of 14 months (group 1) and 14 children who underwent sequential surgery at a mean age of 29 months (group 2). We found a similar incidence of adverse events between 2 treatment groups. No eyes developed endophthalmitis. The mean absolute interocular difference in logMAR visual acuities between the 2 treatment groups was 0.12 for the simultaneous group and 0.06 for the sequential group (P=0.432). The mean number of surgeries were 2.2 vs 3.0 in Group 1 and 2 (p:0.001).

Conclusions:

Simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery in congenital cataracts is not associated with a difference in the incidence of adverse events or visual outcomes. Patients who undergo sequential surgery requires higher number of surgeries.
