Abstract Details

Purpose:

Capsulotomy is a critical step in cataract surgery. Lasers have the potential to perform anterior capsulotomies with high precision and reproducibility. A new laser (CAPSULaser) utilizing a capsular dye has been developed to perform capsulotomies. The initial clinical experience with this device which attaches to the operating microscope will be presented.

Setting:

Pavel Stodulka MD, Richard Packard MD FRCS, FRCOphth GEMINI Eye Clinic, U Gemini 360, Zlin, Czech Republic

Methods:

CAPSULaser was utilized after capsular staining to create 5mm circular capsulotomies in 20 eyes with clinically signifcant cataract without any other ocular pathology or any previous surgery. The patients were monitored postoperatively at one week, one month and three months for capsular changes and shift in IOL position.

Results:

Complete circular capsulotomies were achieved in all eyes. The cataract surgery was performed with no complications in all cases. The detailed clinical results including intraoperative observations and follow-up will be presented.

Conclusions:

The initial experience with CAPSULaser indicates that the device is safe and efficient. Another potential advantage of this laser technology, apart from the consistency of the capsulotomy, is that it fits into the usual workflow of cataract surgery without the need to move the patient.
