Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the compliance and adherence to anti- glaucoma drugs in Indian population

Setting:

Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, New Delhi

Methods:

It was a single centric prospective study . Total of 400 patients were included and they were interviewed on a pre-designed questionnaire. Non-compliance was defined as missing the medications more than two doses per week. Data was analysed using Chi-square , spearman’ co-efficient and regression analysis

Results:

All patients were interviewed on their first follow-up. Compliance rate of 56% was noted and among the major reasons for no-compliance Demographic variability especially economic status, Cost of drugs, frequency and ease of application, preservative used in drug and number of drug prescribed came out to be major barrier to compliance and adherence.

Conclusions:

56% compliance rate was in my study. 80% of subjects reported cost and frequent applications of drugs as a major factor governing compliance. 44% patients reported one or more problem in using glaucoma medications. Difficulty in opening the bottle and squeezing the bottle were among the reasons of non-adherent. Cost of the drug was one of the main reason for non-compliance. Number and frequency of using drops came only second to cost in non-compliance. BAK as preservative in anti- Glaucoma drug is a major obstacle in compliance because of its side-effects.
