Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the optical biomaterial purity of a hydrophobic acrylic foldable EROV intraocular lens regarding fluid filled microvacuoles (glistenings) and to test the optical quality using an optical bench system.

Setting:

The David J Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology and International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Department of Ophthalmology, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany

Methods:

Glistening development has been induced artificially in the lab using the TECNIS® Symfony IOL (AMO) compared to the AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® IOL (Alcon) by immersing the lenses in water at 45°C for 24h with subsequent incubation at 37°C for 2.5h. Severity grade of glistenings is calculated according to the Miyata scale. Optical analysis of the TECNIS® Symfony IOL (AMO) was carried out in water using the spectrophotometer (OptiSpheric IOL, Trioptics) at three different apertures to determine modulation transfer function (MTF) and relative light transmission.

Results:

Optical bench analysis showed an extended range of vision for the TECNIS® Symfony IOL (AMO) combined with good optical biomaterial purity.

Conclusions:

TECNIS® Symfony IOL (AMO) is a new extended range of vision IOL on the market with excellent optical material and optical quality performance.
