Quality of vision in presbyopic patients implanted with polyfocal bioanalogic intraocular lens

Purpose:

Clinical evaluation of functional results and quality of vision after implantation of a bioanalogic, polyfocal, accommodative intraocular lens

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, University Center of Ophthalmology and Oncology, Silesian University of Medicine, Katowice, Poland

Methods:

The analyzed group consisted of 20 presbyopic patients implanted with bioanalogic intraocular lens WIOL-CF (Medicem, Cz). There were 12 man and 8 women, age from 23 to 77y. Patients underwent standard cataract phacoemulsification. 17 patients were implanted bilaterally and in 3 only one eye was implanted. Follow-up was 12-24 months. Uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity for distance, intermediate and near vision, subjective refraction, glare and halos rate, PCO, depth of focus, contrast sensitivity analysis and overall satisfaction of the procedure were analyzed.

Results:

We analyzed the data of 17 patients (34 eyes) implanted bilaterally. Mean post-op UCDVA and BCDVA was 1,0 and 1,1 (decimal), respectively. Mean bilateral UCIVA and UCNVA was J3,3 and J2,5 respectively. Only 15% of patients reported mild undisturbed glare and halo, 100% of patients were spectacle independent, 93% were satisfied or very satisfied, one patient presented PCO 12 months and one 24 months post-op. Surgery is simple, safe and predictable. The improvement after surgery of contrast sensitivity and visual function test - VF14 was statistically significant (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

The implantation of polyfocal, bioanalogic intraocular lens is interesting option for patients who wants to be totally independent of glasses after cataract surgery. WIOL-CF brings back full, natural vision via combination of multiple mechanisms of action.
