Trifocal vs monofocal intraocular lenses effectiveness after cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the accuracy of the refractive correction when using a monofocal IOL (Acrysof® IQ SN60WF; Alcon Laboratories) versus a trifocal IOL (Acrysof® IQ Panoptix; Alcon Laboratories) in cataract surgery.

Setting:

Novovisión Clinic, Madrid, Spain.

Methods:

Retrospective, observational study. The charts of consecutive patients that underwent cataract surgery performed in a single center and by the same surgeon were reviewed.

Results:

The charts of 180 eyes with cataract surgery and the monofocal IOL (M) and 180 eyes that had the trifocal IOL (T) were reviewed. 3 months after surgery, the percentage of eyes within 0.5D of refractive error was similar in the M and in the T groups (76% versus 83%, respectively; P=0.1). In addition, the postoperative best-corrected visual acuity was similar in both groups (0.92 versus 0.95; P=0.8). Nevertheless, the postoperative spherical equivalent was better in the M group (-0.01D versus +0.08D in the M and T groups, respectively; P=0.03).

Conclusions:

The refractive results of both monofocal and trifocal IOLs used in the current study seem to be similar. A slight undercorrection is observed in the Panoptix® group, that seems to be not clinically relevant.
