Purpose:
Predictability of visual outcomes after cataract surgery in toric vs non-toric intraocular lenses.
Setting:
Novovisión Clinic, Madrid, Spain.
Methods:
Retrospective, observational study. The charts of consecutive patients that underwent cataract surgery performed in a private single center and by the same surgeon were reviewed. We compared the results obtained with a toric monofocal IOL (Acrysof® IQ SA60AT; Alcon laboratories) versus a non-toric monofocal IOL (Acrysof® IQ SN60WF; Alcon laboratories).
Results:
55 eyes with a T monofocal IOL and 302 eyes with a NT monofocal IOL were analyzed. There were no significant difference in the preoperative parameters between groups, except for the preoperative cylinder, which was -1.97±1.09 vs 0.75±0.6 diopters (D) in the T and NT groups, respectively (P=0.0001). The best-corrected visual acuity and the spherical equivalent were similar in both groups after surgery (P=0.9 and P=0.7, respectively). The postoperative cylinder was 0.49±0.6D and 0.45±0.5D in the T and NT groups respectively (P=0.6
Conclusions:
The use of toric IOLs to correct astigmatism in cataract surgery seems to obtain the same refractive results than those obtained in the low preoperative astigmatism population with non toric IOLs. Furthermore, it seems that even using toric IOLs, the patients will not be completely “cylinder free”.
