Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine the rotational stability of the Asqelio Toric Monofocall intraocular lens (IOL) (AST, Boston, Masschusets) using objective image and Itrace (Tracey, Houston, Texas) technology.
Setting:
Study done at Hospital La Fe, Valencia, Spain
Methods:
A total of 30 patients (mean age: 69 ± 8.5 years) with healthy eyes and astigmatism in biometrics > 3 Prismatic Diopters (PD), presenting cataract surgery were implanted monocularly with the Asqelio Toric Monofocal IOL and followed up to 90 days postoperatively. Images of the IOL were captured with the Itrace technology through a maximally dilated pupil immediately after surgery and after 1 to 3 days, 30 days, and 90 days. Centering of the IOL were analyzed with Itrace technology through angle kappa and alpha distance and the tilt of the IOL through the measurement of the coma.
Results:
Absolute values for centering of the IOL postoperatively were related to angle kappa positive in all cases, ranging from +1° to +5°. The mean angle kappa was 2.68° and 2.10° in the right and left eye, respectively. Different subjective perception of photic phenomena between the two eyes was recorded only in 2 patients. Wave aberration measurements of the same IOL were highly repetitive (deviation <0.02 μm). Coma increased with decentration at a rate of 0.18 μm / mm and 0.19 μm in the right and left eye, respectively.
Conclusions:
The Asqelio Monofocal Toric IOL showed good rotational stability after implantation. The measurements with the Itrace technology suppose a perfect system for evaluate the postoperative centering and the tilt of the lens assuming an improvement of the visual quality of the patient.
