Abstract Details

Purpose:

to assess the functional benefit on binocular vision of two complementary multifocal IOLs .

Setting:

Centre Vision Bretagne, Vannes, France

Methods:

on top of usual measurements : visual acuity, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity, patient satisfaction questionnaire (including perception of halos) we used the SRD version RDF Version 1.1 (SRD Vision LLC, USA) to evaluate the functional result of continuous phase complementary bilateral multifocal IOLs. 20 patients (40 eyes) were tested at 6 to 12 months follow up. Visual acuity, reading speed (≥ 80 words/minute), luminance and contrast were recorded on a control screen.

Results:

We could confirm earlier standard results: binocular UDVA: 0,03±0,11 logMAR, UIVA (70 cm): 0,01 ±0,16 logMAR, UNVA (35 cm) 0,05±0,09 logMAR. We recorded a plateau defocus curve (0,05 logMAR to 0,00 logMAR) from +0,5D to – 3D. Mild to moderate halos were noted in the first 4 months and vanished later. Thanks to distance control and number of words recording the SRD increased the precision of intermediate (all distances from 40 to 80 cm) and near vision recording with examiner simultaneous control.

Conclusions:

We confirm excellent functional outcomes with a pair of continuous phase complementary multifocal IOLs, creating continuous vision at all distances from infinity to near. The SRD facilitates and shortens clinical evaluation in daily life conditions. Different optical systems can be compared more accurately.
