Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate and compare the clinical outcomes of the two trifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) during a 6-month follow-up period.
Setting:
Veni Vidi Eye Surgery Group, Istanbul, Turkey
Methods:
The retrospective and comparative study included 40 eyes of 20 patients (42-80 y) who underwent uneventful cataract surgeries. Each patient was randomly assigned to one type of IOL, Optiflex® TRIO (BIOTECH) trifocal IOL (20 eyes) or PanOPTIX® (ALCON) trifocal IOL (20 eyes). Visual and refractive changes, visual symptoms and a questionnaire about patients’ satisfactions were evaluated during a 6-month follow-up period. The binocular defocus curve was measured at the 3th and 6th months post-operatively.
Results:
No statistically significant differences were found between the groups in terms of the post-operative uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities (P=0.065 and P=0.119). The post-operative 6th month’s uncorrected near, intermediate and distant visual acuities were as follows: 0.11, 0.23, -0.01 logMAR in Optiflex® TRIO and 0.10, 0.32, 0.06 in PanOPTIX® groups respectively (p1=0.432, p2=0.125 and p3=0.065). Optiflex® TRIO group showed slightly better intermediate visual acuity results as well as the overall patient satisfaction with minimal levels of photic phenomena but PanOPTIX® proved to be slightly better at spectacle independence.
Conclusions:
Both trifocal IOL types provided satisfying spectacle independence with minimal levels of disturbing photic phenomena after cataract surgeries. Both trifocal IOLs were able to provide an effective visual restoration which was maintained during a 6-month post-operative follow-up period.
