Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare changes in reading performance parameters after implantation of 4 multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) models and a monofocal IOL
Setting:
Miranza IOA, Madrid, Spain
Methods:
50 patients were included who underwent bilateral lens phacoemulsification surgery with symmetric implantation of pseudophakic intraocular lenses. 10 of them were implanted with a monofocal lens (Tecnis 1, Johnson & Johnson) and the other 40 different multifocal lenses: Hydrophilic and hydrophobic POD FineVision (PhysIOL), Tecnis 1 ZLB00 and Symfony (Johnson & Johnson), 10 patients for each lens. In the discharge visit, the reading speed test (MNREAD) was performed, binocularly.
Results:
With the larger size of the test optotype (2.5M), the reading times obtained with all the lenses were very similar. When the texts with smaller print were showed, the reading times with a monofocal lens were worse compared to multifocal lenses.
About the multifocal lenses, best results were obtained with the Tecnis 1 ZLB00 lens. With the smallest optotype (1.0M), the Symfony lens worked the worst.
Analyzing the amount of mistakes, the worst results were obtained with the monofocal lens, mainly with the smaller font sizes. The results were very similar with the multifocal lenses, with no statistically significant differences
Conclusions:
Multifocal IOLs with a diffractive component provided good reading performance that was significantly better than that obtained with a monofocal one.
