Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of the study was to evaluate quality of patients’ vision, refractive and functional results of three types of Trifocal IOLs and the improvement of patient satisfaction in presbyopic cataract patients

Setting:

1 Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice, Medical University of Silesia, Poland 2 Department of Ophthalmology, Professor K. Gibinski University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland

Methods:

The study included groups of patients after cataract phacoemulsification with lens implantation: Acrysof IQ PanOptix IOL (Alcon, USA) n = 20 patients, 40 eyes, Acriva Trinova Sinusoidal Trifocal IOL (VSY Biotechnology), n = 10 patients, 20 eyes and RayOne Trifocal IOL (Rayner, UK) n =18 patients, 36 eyes. IOLs were calculated for emmetropy with Barret TK Universal II. The UCDVA, UCIVA, UCNVA, independence eyeglass, contrast sensitivity test - FVA vision tester, evaluation of quality of life by means the VF-14 questionnaire in own modification was performed. The observation was carried out up to 18-24 months postoperatively

Results:

In Snellen decimal scale, a month after surgery mean UCDVA was: 0.94 (PanOptix), 0.92(RayOne), 0.91 (Acriva) ,UCNVA was for the all groups average 0.75 in Snellen scale, postop intermediate J2 was reached in 15 patients (PanOptix), 12 patients (RayOne), 5 patients (Acriva). The results of VF-14 in all study groups show significant differences in points, before and after surgery (p<0.05), but did not show significant differences between the study groups. No refractive unexpected cases were observed. Mean refractive error after surgery were in groups: –0.315 D +/-0.28 (RayOne), -0.32 D +/-0.41 (Acriva), -0.25 D +/-0.35 (PanOptix).

Conclusions:

The quality of active life of a patient after cataract surgery is affected by good vision at different distances, without the need for additional eyeglass correction. The solution of Premium Trifocal IOLs seems to be good option for patients with cataract and presbyopia. It is equally important to reduce the unpleasant photo-optical sensations and improve the contrast vision, because these parameters have a significant impact on the visual functioning of the patient.
