Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the accuracy of Barrett Universal II IOL power calculating formula using Anterior K and Total K.
Setting:
Kenia Eye Hospital, Mumbai, India
Methods:
It was a retrospective study where medical records of subjects who underwent IOL power calculations using IOL Master 700 and those were implanted with different IOL (HOYA-PS-AF-1, HOYA; Aurium, Medennium) by single surgeon were included. Patients with previous ocular surgery, ocular diseases, corneal astigmatism <1.5D, intraoperative complications, grade IV or/above cataract were excluded. Post operative 1 month refraction was noted. Median absolute error (MedAE) (AE= absolute difference between post operative and target refraction spherical equivalent) of Barrett formula using anterior K and total K was calculated. Also percentage of eyes with absolute error within 0.5, 1.0D was noted.
Results:
Seventy eight and 42 eyes were implanted with HOYA-PS-AF-1 and Aurium IOL. MedAE for Barrett II formula using anterior K and Total K was 0.24 and 0.21D respectively in Hoya group and 0.21 and 0.16 D in Aurium group respectively and in Hoya group, MedAE using anterior K and Total K was 0.24 and 0.21D respectively. Mann Whitney test showed non-significant difference in MedAE using anterior K and Total K for Hoya Clear (p=0.87) and Aurium (p=0.99) IOL. The percentage of eyes with absolute errors calculated using anterior and total k were similar within 0.5 and 1.0D for both IOLs.
Conclusions:
In our data, Barrett Universal II formula results into similar post operative refractive error calculated using anterior K versus total K.
