Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the visual outcomes and complications of two different types of phakic intraocular lenses (PIOLs), for correction of moderate to high myopia.
Setting:
Centro Hospitalar Entre o Douro e Vouga, Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal
Methods:
This retrospective study included 33 eyes which underwent phakic intraocular lens implantation with a minimum follow-up period of 1 year. Visual outcomes, intraocular pressure, endothelial cell count (ECC) and incidence of complications were analyzed.
Results:
The study included 26 eyes and 7 eyes in the Artiflex® and Artisan® groups, respectively. At 1-year postoperative visit, the mean best-corrected visual acuity was 0.92± 0.09 in both groups (p<0.05). The difference in mean IOP between preoperatively and the last follow-up examination was 1.7±0.8 mmHg. The median loss of endothelial cells was 5.60% at 1 year (P=0.173). One eye in the Artiflex® group developed a glaucomatous crisis, with consequent Urrets-Zavalia syndrome. No cataract requiring surgical intervention were noted. The ECC loss was significantly negatively correlated to the anterior chamber depth (r=-0.556 p=0.01).
Conclusions:
After 1 years of follow-up, the implantation of Artisan or Artiflex intraocular lens proved to be effective, safe, and predictable for the correction of myopia in phakic eyes.
