Differences in contrast sensitivity between intraocular lenses without and with yellow filter

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine if intraocular lens (IOL) with yellow filter reduces contrast sensitivity with regard to the unfiltered IOL under mesopic lighting conditions.
Setting:
Ophtalmology department of a tertiary level university hospital.
Methods:
It is an ambispective observational cross-sectional study with 56 pseudophakic eyes. Two groups were included: 31 eyes with implantation of a yellow-tinted IOL; and 25 eyes with implantation of a yellow-untinted IOL. The dependent variable of the study was the contrast sensitivity, being the independent variable the type of IOL.
Results:
There were no statistically significant differences, using the non-parametric Mann Whitney U test, between the two studied groups (without and with yellow filter) in relation to contrast sensitivity at all spatial frequencies. There were differences in median, obtaining equal values at frequencies of 3, 12 and 18 c / g (cycles per degree) and higher values belonging to the untinted IOL at frequencies of 0.75, 1.5 and 6 c / g.
Conclusions:
Contrast sensitivity is not altered by the yellow filter, although the median values in three of the six spatial frequencies are in favor of untinted IOL. Further studies with a larger sample should be carried out to confirm or not this hypothesis.
