Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the objective and subjective outcomes after bilateral implantation of the extended depth of focus (EDOF) Mini Well Ready Toric intraocular lens (SIFI Medtech, Italy) in a cohort of astigmatic patients (corneal astigmatism ≥1,5D).

Setting:

The study took place at the department of Ophthalmology of the University of Verona between May 2018 and December 2019, it was supervised by Professor Emilio Pedrotti, person in charge of the Surgical and Medical Cornea Unit.

Methods:

This prospective exploratory study included 20 astigmatic patients (40 eyes with corneal astigmatism ≥1,5D) bilaterally implanted with an EDOF Mini Well Ready Toric intraocular lens (IOL). Three-month follow-up data included corrected and uncorrected distance visual acuities (4 metres and 80, 67 and 40 centimetres), defocus curves, halometry, objective contrast sensitivity, objective optical quality (MTF cut-off, Strehl ratio) and reading performance were measured. Subjective visual quality was evaluated using National Eye Institute Refractive Error Quality of Life Instrument 42 (MEI RQL-42) scores.

Results:

Postoperative uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities at 4 metres was 0,1 logMAR or better in 85% of patients and 0,0 logMAR respectively. Postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuities at 80, 67 and 40 cm were 0,1 logMAR. Postoperative corrected distance visual acuities at 80, 67 and 40 cm were 0,1 logMAR, 0,0 logMAR and 0,1 logMAR respectively. Good results at the defocus curve, halometry, objective contrast sensitivity and reading performance. Excellent NEI RQL-42 subscale scores for near vision, far vision, activity limitations, glare and dependence on correction.

Conclusions:

The EDOF Mini Well Ready Toric IOL represents an effective option in cataract surgery in astigmatic patients according to the excellent objective and subjective outcomes shown in our study.
