Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy, predictability and safety criteria of the implantable collamer® lens (ICL) in the refractive correction of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty.
Setting:
Instituto Universitario Fernandez-Vega, Oviedo, Spain
Methods:
The study (retrospective and observational) includes 20 eyes of 20 patients undergoing deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), who were implanted with an ICL model V4c (central hole) for the correction of residual refraction. The lens implant was performed at least 6 months after the complete removal of sutures. The follow-up time was 13.7±5.0 months (range 6.0 to 22.0). A spherical lens was implanted in 15 eyes of the sample and a toric lens in 5 eyes. The lens implant was performed primarily in 14 phakic eyes, and as an additional implant, in 6 pseudophakic eyes.
Results:
The safety index is greater than 1.0 (1.2) since all eyes maintain or improve visual acuity with correction. The efficacy index was less than 1.0 (0.8), reflecting minimal post-implant lens refraction. Preoperative refractive astigmatism was -2.67±1.36 and improved postoperatively to -1.00±0.91. The preoperative sphere was -7.28±3.76 and improved postoperatively to -0.33±0.95. In all cases, previous anisometropia was corrected. There were no postoperative complications, and the endothelial cell count was not significantly changed after lens implantation.
Conclusions:
ICL implantation in DALK refractive correction is a safe procedure, with acceptable efficacy and predictability.
