Abstract Details
Purpose:
To illustrate the use of excision biopsy, cryotherapy , multilayered amniotic membrane and chemotherapy in management of corneal melanoma.
Setting:
Nirmal Eye Institute
Methods:
50 year old female presented with gradually increasing painless pigmented mass in her right eye. On examination a pigmented elevated lesion was noted near superotemporal peripheral clear cornea with adjacent conjunctival congestion. No evidence of conjunctival pigmentation was noted.
Results:
Excision biopsy with no touch technique was done with lamellar sclerectomy and keratectomy followed by cryotherapy. Excision site was covered with amniotic membrane and 4 cycles of MMC.04 % eye drops prescribed postoperatively. Histopathology of the lesion was consistent with the diagnosis malignant corneal melanoma.
Conclusions:
Although a rare presentation but corneal melanoma can be encountered in clinical practice. Vigilant management is required in suspicious pigmented ocular surface lesion and frequent follow up advisable in view of risk of recurrence.
