The usage of intensive pulsed light in complex treatment of meibomian gland disfunction and chronic allergic conjunctivitis

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To estimate effectiveness of intensive pulsed light therapy in cases of previously unsuccessful treatment for MGD and allergy.
Setting:
Therapeutic Ophthalmology Department. Svyatoslav Fyodorov State Institution Eye Microsurgery Complex, 59A Beskudnikovskii Blvd, 127486, Moscow, Russia.
Methods:
the study involved 30 patients of age 42,4±7,7. All patients had signs of meibomian gland disfunction (TBUT not more than 3 seconds) and allergic conjunctivitis. In the history of disease all groups had standard courses of treatment with returning of symptoms in one month. Method of treatment included 3 procedures of IPL therapy. Wavelength of 590nm and 6 ms. pulse duration was used. For parameters of energy determination Fitzpatrick's skin phototype classification was used. After procedure patients were receiving anti-inflammatory therapy for 3 days, artificial tears and anliallergic eye drops. Patients condition before IPL treatment was used as control.
Results:
After 3 month supervision 93,3% of patients showed improvement of meibomian gland secret structure and pronounced decreasing in questionnaire indicator. All patients showed improvement in lid margin structure. No allergic signs were revealed.
Conclusions:
Received anti-inflammatory effect of IPL therapy can be used as part of complex treatment for dry eye with meibomian gland dysfunction and allergy component.
