Abstract Details
Purpose:
Changes in body fluid balance before and after hemodialysis (HD) affect choroidal thickness. The aim of our study is to evaluate the effect of HD on subfoveal choroid thickness measurement repeatability by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).
Setting:
n this prospective study, 26 eyes of 26 patients who underwent HD due to Diabetic nephropathy at Afyonkarahisar State Hospital were included.
Methods:
n this prospective study, 26 eyes of 26 patients who underwent HD due to Diabetic nephropathy at Afyonkarahisar State Hospital were included. Subfoveal choroidal thickness measurement was performed with SD-OCT 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after HD. Measurements were repeated 3 times with 2-minute rest breaks in between. Repeatability was evaluated with in-class correlation coefficient, variation coefficient and test-retest variability.
Results:
The mean age of 26 patients was 46.23 ± 9.54 years. Subfoveal choroid thickness before dialysis was 243.50 ± 10.23 μm, after dialysis 234.29 ± 9.41 μm and was statistically significant (p <0.001). The in-class correlation coefficient before dialysis was 0.948 (0.895-0.976, 95% CI), while this value after dialysis was 0.989 (0.977-0.995, 95% CI). The coefficient of variation before HD was 0.016 ± 0.004% test-retest variability 7.864 ± 1.996 μm, after HD variation coefficient and test-retest variability was 0.006 ± 0.003 3.074 ± 1.536.
Conclusions:
As a result, the reproducibility of choroidal measurements before HD decreases. This shows the importance of choroid thickness and stability in body fluid balance in order to make optimal measurements.
