Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the change in tear film parameters pre and post light therapy in dry eye subjects.

Setting:

Kenia Eye Hospital, Mumbai, India

Methods:

It was a prospective study where subjects age between 20-60 years, diagnosed with dry eye and having best corrected visual acuity of 0.2logMAR or better, non invasive tear break up time (NITBUT) <10 seconds were included. Subjects with ocular disease, ocular surgery, systemic diseases like thyroid disease, hormonal therapy were excluded. After complete ophthalmic evaluation, subjects underwent tear parameters assessment using SBM and meibomian gland assessment using Me-Check (Meibomian gland dysfunction screening module) . Eye-Light light therapy was given as per standard manufacturer protocol and data was analysed pre and post therapy session.

Results:

Thirty three eyes of 17 patients with mean±SD age and IOP of 39.94±17.43 years 14.87±3.23 mmHg respectively were included. Pre and post therapy NITBUT was similar (Paired T test, P=0.51) Lipid layer thickness was found to be increased post therapy however it was not statistically significant (Paired T test, P=0.76). However there was significant reduction in the grades of meibography suggesting reduction in meibomian gland dysfunction (Chi Square = 13.50, P=0.02).

Conclusions:

We did not find significant change in tear parameters despite significant improvement in meibography post therapy.
