Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report the anatomical and functional outcome of scleral buckling surgery in retinoschisis patients with retinal detachment .
Setting:
Retrospective case series, Retina Ophthalmic Research Center, Izmir, Turkey
Methods:
Five juvenile retinoschisis patients with retinal detachment who underwent scleral buckling surgery were included.
Results:
Mean age of five patients (2 female, 3 male) was 14.5±4 years. Mean follow up time was 65.3±8 months. All patients were phakic. Fundus exam revealed retinal detachment and subretinal fibrotic bands in all patients. Best corrected visual acuity improved from 0.63±0.2 logmar to 0.15±0.1 logmar (p=0.002). Retina remained attached in all patients during the follow-up. One patient had glaucoma managed with medical treatment.
Conclusions:
Scleral buckling surgery provided long term anatomic and functional success in juvenile retinoschisis patients with retinal detachment eventhough they had subretinal fibrosis preoperatively. This conservative surgical option is effective and may be first option in young phakic retinoschisis patients.
