Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report a case series of A technique Modified for Ocular surface reconstruction ‘Modified - Simple Limbal Epithelial Transplant technique (M-SLET) in 4 cases of chemical injury, and one case of Xeroderma Pigmentosa.
Setting:
Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital , Pune INDIA
Methods:
Surgical technique of Simple Limbal Epithelial Transplant (SLET)is well described in literature. Here we have modified the technique to Modified - Simple Limbal Epithelial Transplant technique (M-SLET) where limbal epithelial explant pieces are kept under the amniotic membrane (as compared to pieces being kept above the amniotic membrane in routine SLET) and secured with fibrin glue, creating a hypoxic environment for their culture and good growth.
Results:
All 5 patients, 4 with chemical injury and 1 with xeroderma pigmentosa were examined and assessed at 1 week, 2 weeks 2 months and 12 months after the procedure for the health of their ocular surface based on clinical examination, All 5 were found to have healthy limbal anatomy and healthy ocular surface with healed epithelial surface at 1 week post-operative period, showing faster and positive response to the hypoxic environment created
Conclusions:
Modified – Simple Limbal Epithelial Transplant serves a better hypoxic environment near to the one achieved in laboratory for cultivation of epithelial stem cells on the human amniotic membrane as in cultivated Limbal Epithelial Transplant Procedure. In addition It also gives good cover and support to the cells.
