Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare early LASIK Visual results using the Visumax and FS200 lasers in the treatment of myopia
Setting:
A single setting at WA Laser Eye Centre Perth, Australia
Methods:
A single centre prospective randomised trial was performed over 6 weeks. Myopic patients were allocated to either have LASIK with the Visumax femtosecond later or the WaveLight FS200. The day 1 postoperative Uncorrected Distance Visual acuity (UCDVA) were measured as well as pre and postoperative Mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE).
Results:
78 eyes underwent LASIK using the Visumax system and 53 using the WaveLight FS200.
On Day 1 postop 89.9% of Visumax eyes achieved 6/6 or better compared to 81.1% of FS200 eyes. 38.5% of Visumax eyes were 6/5 or better compared to 32.07% of FS200 eyes.
In the Visumax group the MRSE preop was -2.44 (range -0.125 to -11.75) and -2.80 (-0.125 to -9.50) in the FS200 group. The postop MRSE was -0.0086 ( 0.375 to -1.125) and +0.09 ( 0.675. to -0.75) in the Visumax and FS200 groups respectively. There were no intra or early postoperative complications.
Conclusions:
Both Visumax and FS200 femtosecond LASIK platforms are safe and effective in the treatment of myopia. The lower energy settings of the Visumax may be a causal factor for better Day 1 UCDVA. There was a tendency towards minimal myopia with the Visumax and hyperopia with the FS200 which was not clinically significant
