Abstract Details
Purpose:
Refractory glaucoma patients continue to require surgical intervention in the form of trabeculectomy surgery or aqueous drainage device. Patients with thin sclera or scleromalacia continue to present problems in those surgeries.
Setting:
The procedure is done in a tertiary teaching hospital.
Methods:
In this article, we present a novel way to reinforce already thinned sclera due to Ehler Danlos syndrome, to avoid complications while inserting glaucoma drainage devices.
Results:
Using the one-stage scleral reinforcement with pericardium patch graft has allowed safe implantation of the aqueous drainage device and avoided complications such as scleral perforation.
Conclusions:
This strengthening procedure can be considered by readers in other surgeries that carry the risk of scleral perforation if performed in patients with a thin sclera.
