Abstract Details
Purpose:
To demonstrate the variability of 60-4 visual fields in a normal control population.
Setting:
60-4 visual field testing may be useful in identifying visual field defects in patients with early glaucoma. There is variability of 60-4 visual field testing. It is important to demonstrate this variability in a normal control population and then identify potential causes of this variability.
Methods:
Consecutive enrollment of normal control patients without glaucoma who had a complete ocular examination, retinal nerve fiber layer ocular coherence tomography, and three types of Humphrey visual field testing, including 10-2, 24-2, and 60-4. The order of the visual field testing was randomized.
Results:
All normal control patients had a normal ocular exam, retinal nerve fiber layer ocular coherence tomography, and normal 10-2 and 24-2 visual fields. Every control had an abnormal 60-4 visual field with defects that varied in location and severity. Reliability of all visual fields was excellent.
Conclusions:
All normal control patients had abnormal 60-4 visual fields and the visual field defects varied in location and severity. The variability of 60-4 visual fields demonstrated in this normal control group may prevent accurate interpretation of 60-4 in glaucoma patients. We propose that this variability may reflect differences in retinal anatomy, photoreceptor sensitivity in the far periphery, and individual differences in facial contour.
