Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report the efficacy of XEN45 implant at 12-month follow-up.
Setting:
Ospedale Santo Spirito di Casale Monferrato (government hospital in Piedmont, Italy)
Methods:
This was a retrospective, non-randomised interventional case series involving patients who underwent XEN45. Primary outcome measures were the intraocular pressure (IOP) and the number of medications at 1-year follow-up visit. Two IOP criteria were chosen to measure success: IOP ≤ 21 mmHg and ≥ 20% reduction from baseline (criteria one); and IOP ≤ 15 mm Hg and ≥ 30% reduction from baseline
(criteria two).
Results:
In the overall study population, XEN gel stent significantly reduced intraocular pressure from 24.4 mmHg at baseline to 17.4 mmHg, p < 0.0001.
At month 12, 74 (90,24%) eyes were classified as success. The mean number of antiglaucoma medications was significantly reduced in our patients.
Obstruction of device 2 eyes (2,4%) , XEN implant extrusion 2 eyes (2,4%), XEN implant intrusion 2 eyes (2,4%), XEN implant extrusion and endophthalmitis1eye (1,2%), good position of device but inadequate intraocular pressure control 1eye (1,2%)
Conclusions:
The XEN45 implant proved to be an effective treatment with a good safety profile at 1-year follow-up period. A strictly follow up of the bleb is mandatory to avoid complications probably due to a low compliance of patients.
