Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare corneal endothelial cell parameters via specular microscopy in eyes with pigmentary glaucoma (PG) and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).
Setting:
Beyoglu Eye Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Science, ISTANBUL, TURKEY
Methods:
Fourty one eyes of 21 patients with PG and 33 eyes of 17 patients with POAG were included in this cross-sectional study. Eyes had intraocular surgery were excluded. Corneal endothelial cell density (ECD), the coefficient of variation (CV) in the cell area, hexagonality, and central corneal thickness (CCT) were measured by specular microscopy (CEM-530, NIDEK, Japan) and compared between groups.
Results:
There were no significant differences between PG and POAG groups in terms of age (38.6±11.3 vs 38.8±3.0 years); intraocular pressure (IOP; 15.8±6.1 vs 16.6±5.3 mmHg), cup to disc ratio (0.59±0.25 vs 0.59±0.21), retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (80.9±23.8 vs 82.1±21.4 µ), respectively (p>0.05 for each). The mean number of antiglaucomatous drugs used were 2.28±0.76 in PG and 2.88±1.17 in POAG group (p=0.17). The mean best corrected Snellen visual acuity was better in PG (0.86±0.18 vs 0.69±0.38; p=0.02). The mean CCT were 531.2±34.9 µ and 535.4±33.9 µ (p=0.62); ECD were 2667.6±359.8 and 2577.3±285.9 per mm2 (p=0.29); hexagonality were 63.2±11.2% and 61.3±6.4% (p=0.43); CV were 34.6±6.8 and 34.3±9.9 (p=0.86) in PG and POAG groups, respectively.
Conclusions:
There is no difference between eyes with PG and POAG in terms of endothelial cell parameters measured with specular microscopy.
