Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze the case series of Frosted Branch Angiitis of diverse etiology from two tertiary eye care center in South India

Setting:

Aravind Eye Hospital and Post Graduate Institute of Ophthalmology, Pondicherry, India

Methods:

A retrospective analysis of seven cases of Frosted Branch Angiitis over 3 years duration and follow up of 1 year were included. A detailed ophthalmic history was taken. Both eyes were examined for best corrected visual acuity and slit lamp bio microscopy of anterior segment, intraocular pressure with Goldman applanation tonometry and fundoscopy with indirect ophthalmoscopy. Ultrasound B scan, Optical Coherence Tomography(OCT) and Fundus Fluorescein Angiography(FFA) were done whenever required. Appropriate systemic evaluation with the internist and rheumatology consult were done. The patients were followed up to evaluate the etiology, varied presentation, response to treatment and final visual outcome

Results:

Among the 7 cases studied, in the immunocompromised group we had two patients. Both patients were positive for Human immunodeficiency virus(HIV). First one had unilateral Frosted Branch Angiitis and other had fundus picture suggestive of bilateral Cytomegalovirus(CMV) retinitis. Subsequently, the patients were treated with Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy(HAART). In the immunocompetent group we had patients with Frosted Branch Angiitis secondary to Tuberculosis, Behcet’s disease, Idiopathic, Trauma and Viral, after excluding all other etiologies. On follow up, post treatment all patients had visual acuity ranged between 6/60-6/36

Conclusions:

Frosted Branch Angiitis is a clinical sign with multifactorial etiology. Meticulous examination, close follow up and timely treatment is necessary in all cases. Treatment in each case differs based on the underlying etiology, which necessitates tailored approach for successful visual outcome.
