Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the antibiotic sensitivity of microorganisms in the conjunctival flora of patients posted for cataract surgery. This was done to find out the most effective perioperative antibiotic that should be used in patients undergoing ocular surgery to prevent endophthalmitis
Setting:
The study was done in a tertiary eye hospital in South India
Methods:
Conjunctival swab was taken from 676 patients posted for cataract surgery between Nov 2016 and Feb 2019 . Culture and sensitivity was done on them using standard microbiological techniques
Results:
The sensitivity of the 301 samples that grew Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus was 70.10% to Moxifloxacin, 73.76% to Gatifloxacin, 76.08%,to Ciprofloxacin, 60.8% to Norfloxacin,88.04% to Gentamicin , 93.36% to Tobramycin, 93.03% to Amikacin,50.5% to Azithromycin and 89.37% to Chloramphenicol. The higher sensitivity of Aminoglycosides and Chloramphenicol when compared to fourth generation fluoroquinalones was statistically significant. The 57 samples that grew Staphylococcus aureus were also statistically more sensitive to Aminoglycosides and Chloramphenicol when compared to fourth generation fluoroquinalones
Conclusions:
Tobramycin, Amikacin, Gentamicin and Chloramphenicol are the most effective antibiotics for perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis in patients undergoing cataract surgery to prevent postoperative endophthalmitis.
