Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the interface quality of different corneal lamellar-cut depths with femtosecond(FS) lasers using laboratory animal eyes.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Dokkyo Medical University, Tochigi, Japan
Methods:
Full lamellar cuts were made on 16 deepithelialized porcine corneas using two kinds of a FS laser. Half of the corneas were cut by VisuMax(Carl Zeiss) and the others were cut by iFS(AMO). The each cut depths were 200, 300, 400, 500(㎛) from the anterior surface of the cornea. Three-dimensional confocal laser microscopy (3DLM, LEXT OLS400,OLIMPUS) images of the bed surface of the corneas were analyzed by measuring the parameter of roughness(Rz jis). Statistical analysis was performed using Tukey-Kramer method. All p values were considered significant when less than 0.05.
Results:
The mean values of Rz jis at each depth were 5.01±1.02, 4.49±0.88, 5.07±1.39, 7.27±3.01(㎛) and 4.64±1.21, 4.98±0.94, 4.76±0.96, 8.98±3.70 (㎛) in the two groups respectively. The difference was statistically significant between each 200-400㎛ and 500㎛ in both two groups (p<0.05 respectively). There were no significant differences between the two groups.
Conclusions:
In porcine eyes, there was a significant increase in roughness of corneal interface following a FS laser dissection at the depth over 400㎛. The indication for a cornea dissection using FS laser in a clinical case depends on how deep the lesion is.
