Abstract Details
Purpose:
Demonstrate the usefulness of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) as an emergency procedure or as a bridge until the performance of a definitive penetrating keratoplasty (PK)
Setting:
 Clinic case
Methods:
AMT was performed due to large perforation with iris prolapse.
Subsequently, months later, the PK was performed under better conditions, once the underlying inflammatory condition was controlled
Results:
The AMT made it possible to solve the perforation in addition to helping to reduce inflammation in the perilimbic region.
After the transplant, the patient presented a correct evolution without recurrence of the disease
Conclusions:
AMT in the management of corneal perforation secondary to peripheral ulcerative keratitis is a very good option because in these cases a tectonic corneal transplant presents poor results due to the inflammation present and the technical difficulty in performing the surgery.
In addition, postponing the PK once inflammation is controlled allows the prognosis for transplant survival to be better.
