Abstract Details

Purpose:

The authors discuss their experience of using one cornea in three patients with different corneal pathologies in Indian scenario.The acute shortage of good quality donor corneal tissues calls for innovative methods to ensure optimum utilization of the available resources including corneal tissues.

Setting:

Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Amritsar

Methods:

One donor tissue was used for three different corneal pathologies using different lamellar surgical techniques.

Results:

The recent advances in lamellar surgery techniques have enabled the use of one donor corneal tissue in multiple recipients. The authors discuss their experience of using one cornea in three patients with different corneal pathologies.

Conclusions:

Despite immense progress in eye banking and corneal transplantation in the last few years in India, we still have a long way to go. Component corneal surgery is bound to play a key role in combating corneal blindness in India.
