Purpose:
To evaluate clinical and demographic features of paediatric keratoplasties performed in our clinic
Setting:
University of Health Sciences, Beyoglu Eye Training and Research Hospital
Methods:
Patients aged 0-15 years who underwent keratoplasty between 2016-2019 in our hospital were reviewed retrospectively. Age, gender, side, diagnosis, type of keratoplasty, follow-up period, preoperative and postoperative best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA), additional surgery to keratoplasty, lens status were recorded.
Results:
34 patients included in the study, 13 (%38,2) were male and 21 (%61,8) were female, and the mean age was 10,94 ± 4.16 (3-16) years. 15(%44,1) were right eye and 19(%55,9) were left eye. Keratoplasty was performed in 1 case due to keratitis, 16 cases due to corneal scar, 2 cases due to corneal dystrophy, 14 cases due to keratoconus and 1 case due to perforation. Penetrating keratoplasty(PKP) was performed in 22(%64,7) cases, deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty(DALK) in 10(%29,4) cases, Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty(DMEK) in 1(%2,9) case, and re-PKP in 1(%2,9) case. Preoperative mean BCVA was 0,029 ± 0,034 (0,001-0,1) and postoperative mean BCVA was 0,175 ± 0,187 (0,001-0,7) and the difference was statically significant.(p<0,05) Additional lensectomy was applied to PKP in 2 cases, pars plana vitrectomy and lensectomy in 2 cases. In the last examination, 26(%76,5) cases were phakic, 6(%17,65) cases were pseudophakic, 2(%5,9) cases were aphakic.
Conclusions:
In paediatric cases, keratoplasties, which are mostly performed due to corneal scar and keratoconus, have positive results on visual rehabilitation
