Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the association between ptergium and pinguecula excision and subsequent improvement in dry eye syndrome.
Setting:
Seyhan State Hospital, Adana, Turkey
Methods:
We included 25 consecutive patients with primary nasal ptergium or pinguecula and dry eye symptoms undergoing ocular surgery for the first time from September 2019- January 2020. Our primary outcomes were 2-month postoperative changes in tear film breakup time (TBUT), corneal epithelial fluorescein staining, Schirmer test, OXFORD scale score and OSDI score.
Results:
25 eyes from 25 different patients underwent ptergium/ pinguecula excision and conjunctival autografting with using absorbable sutures. The mean age was 38.5 ± 9.4 (range 20-65) years. Mean preoperative TBUT, Schirmer test, and dry eye symptom scores were 4.10 ± 1.25 seconds, 8.07 ± 3.27 mm, and 2.80 ± 0.76 points. Mean postoperative 2 month TBUT, Schirmer test, and dry eye symptom scores were 8.80 ± 1.13 seconds, 8.27 ± 2.02 mm, and 0.25 ± 0.47 points, respectively. The median pre- and postoperative changes were found to be statistically significant by Wilcoxon signed-rank tests for TBUT and dry eye symptom score. Schirmer test score was not found tobe statistically significant. Flurosein staining was shown to be significantly reduced.
Conclusions:
The decrease in dry eye symptoms and findings after pterygium/ pinguecula excision is very important for the comfort of patients and the ocular surface.
