Abstract Details
Purpose:
To describe a rare case of Dermatopathia Pigmentosa Reticularis (DPR) with Salzmann’s nodular degeneration (SND).
Setting:
Department of Ophtalmology, Habib Bourguiba University Hospital, Sfax, Tunisia.
Methods:
Case report.
Results:
A 21-year-old healthy woman presented with a complaint of ocular irritation. Ophthalmic examination revealed superficial nodular corneal opacities in the left eye and a shortened tear film break-up time in both eyes without any other abnormality. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography of the left eye showed prominent hyperreflective deposits under the corneal epithelium. Clinical examination of the patient showed the presence of generalized reticulate hyperpigmentation, onychodystrophy and non scarring alopecia. Laboratory investigations were normal except for a mild hypochromic microcytic anemia. The patient was diagnosed with DPR with corneal features suggestive of SND and dry eye.
Conclusions:
DPR is a rare ectodermal disorder with the diagnostic triad of generalized reticulate hyperpigmentation, noncicatricial alopecia and onychodystrophy. Other less specific skin signs and extracutaneous manifestations have been described. The occurrence of DPR with corneal involvement was reported in few cases in world litterature. In a patient of SND the diagnosis of DPR must be kept in mind and a dermatological exam should be done.
