Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report a case of severe acute onset dry eye following Epstein Barr viral infection.
Setting:
Sunayan Advanced Eye Institute, Tamluk, West Bengal, India
Methods:
We report a case of severe dry eyes following an episode of arthralgia affecting right sided knee joint along with viral conjunctivitis and dacryoadenitis in both the eyes in a young girl. This case points out the importance of relevant clinical associations and of disregarding the confounding differentials to arrive at an accurate diagnosis with the aid of appropriate serology. Epstein-Barr virus is a rather uncommon but distinctly possible cause for severe acute onset dry eye and can be associated with extraocular features such as arthlagia, fever and skin rashes.
Results:
Improvement of severe dry eyes with medical management along with punctal cautery.
Conclusions:
Appropriate diagnosis and proper management help to prevent vision threatening complications.
