Autologous serum for the treatment of grade 2 and 3 neurotrophic keratitis: 2 years follow-up

Purpose: 
To evaluate management of Iatrogenic Neurotrophic keratitis with autologous serum treatment in 34 patients affected by, iatrogenic NK 
Setting: 
 University of Siena, Departement  Of Opthalmology , Siena Italy
Villa Donatello Private Hospital Florence Italy 
Methods: 
 34 patients (19 female, 16 males) with diagnosis of secondary Neurotrophic Keratitis ( NK) were enrolled, (mean age: 72,1 ± 11Y) Patients were treated with autologous serum for 1 year. Patients where included in 3 groups according to recent NK classifications (stage I, II,III ). Confocal microscopy evaluation (IVCM), anterior segment (AS.OCT)  Minimum corneal thickness MCT , and Best corrected visual acuity where performed at  15 days, 1 month 3 months 6 months  and 12 months after treatment. 
Results: 
 All 36 patients showed a good to complete recovery of corneal Neurotrophic keratitis starting form 1 month after the beginning of treatment, BCVA increased from a baseline 0,395 avg logMAR  to 0,24 logMAR at 12th month ,remaining stabile up to the 24th month  MCT  increased from 356 average μm at baseline  to 465 average μm  at the end of follow up remaining stabile at the and of the follow up 24 months 
Conclusions: 
 According to literature and to our brief study results, autologous serum is a valid medical approach for the treatment of Neurotrophic keratitis
